Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

Pavement, for those of you who dont know, are the band that released the song Cut Your Hair, which is featured in every 90s movie where there is a haircut scene. At least Stephen Malkmus gets a nice royalty check everytime TBS decides to air A Very Brady Sequel. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is one of those cds I picked up after hearing the single, or in this case seeing the video for Cut Your Hair on 120 Minutes. MTV used to be so cool... The Headbanger's Ball on Saturday, 120 Minutes on Sunday... now they just show people digging through other peoples underwear drawers. But I digress.

Pavement produces a unique melodic version of grunge that comes off a lot like Nirvana's unplugged album. Malkmus basically invented the lo-fi indie rock sound that would permeate college campuses throughout the 90s. Plus he sort of looks like Michael Showalter, so thats cool too.

This album is chock full of grungey downtuned guitar balanced by Steve's bright Fender Jaguar melodies. Plus there's even an homage to Take 5. Songs in 5/4 time are always good.
